Because a typical farmhouse sink ordinarily has a height of nine inches, and the space above most existing kitchen cabinet doors (often covered by a false drawer piece) is only 6-8 inches tall, you’ll quickly find that some carpentry is required to accommodate the new sink. If you currently have a standard drop-in sink in a typical cabinet frame and are planning to install a copper farmhouse or apron front sink, you have two options to consider:

1) Have your contractor rebuild or shorten the cabinet doors under the sink before installation, or

2) Install a short apron sink that is made exactly for this purpose!

A short apron sink allows for easy retrofitting into existing kitchen cabinets.

The stock size short apron sink has outside dimensions of 33” x 22” x 6.5” to easily fit into space above your under-sink cabinet doors, without having to shorten them. This is a significant benefit if you happen to have beveled doors that are not easily cut and refinished.

Even if avoiding a complicated retrofit isn’t your motive, the short apron sink style is a great choice to complement smaller spaces in your townhome or cabin while maintaining the desired farmhouse style. If the stock size short apron sink is not ideal for your space and you’d prefer a wider double basin, or a unique art motif designed into the front, remember that customization is available. Due to the artisan nature of CopperSinksOnline.com sinks, dimensions may vary up to ½” in any direction.

33″ Short Apron Single Well Copper Sink

Installing cleats in the frame around your new farmhouse sink is still recommended, as the heavy gauge of quality copper sinks may require some additional support.

Good luck with your project, and feel free to call our helpful Customer Service Representatives at 360-321-2131 with any questions.
urn:store:4:blog:post:77 https://www.sinksgallery.com/the-virus-killing-properties-of-copper The Virus Killing Properties of Copper
The good folks at SoLuna Copper have been providing the highest quality of artisan crafted copper products for close to 20 years. The copper studios where they create these handcrafted copper products have perfected coppersmithing techniques that have been passed down through the centuries from master to apprentice.

In our article titled “Copper – the World’s First Super Metal” we explored how copper has been used for over 10,000 years in making jewelry, art, and coins due to copper’s durability and inherent beauty when polished. We also covered how copper’s pliability and its ability to evenly distribute heat, has made it the metal of choice for thousands of years to use when crafting household utensils, copper bowls, and cookware. And where would modern civilization be without the use of copper for transporting electricity from power plants to each of our homes.

I think we can all agree that copper is truly a “super metal”. But in light of the Covid-19 pandemic and the on-going threat of antibiotic resistance bacteria, we believe the time is long overdue to shed more light on copper’s greatest superpower, its ability to kill germs and viruses on contact.

Ancient Knowledge of the Benefits of Copper

Long before they had any knowledge of what a germ or virus was, our ancestors were already familiar with the power of copper.

"Copper is truly a gift from Mother Nature in that the human race has been using it for over eight millennia," says Michael G. Schmidt, a professor of microbiology and immunology at the Medical University of South Carolina who researches copper in healthcare settings.

In fact, the first known use of copper as an infection-killing agent was documented in the Smith’s Papyrus. The oldest-known medical document dating back to Egypt circa 1700 BC.

But many scholars feel that the understanding of copper’s natural antibacterial properties date back 2,000 years earlier to ancient hieroglyphs denoting copper with the “ankh” symbol meaning “eternal life”.

But the Egyptians were not the only ancient civilization that figured out the true power of copper. The Chinese used copper coins to treat the heart, stomach, and bladder. The Phoenicians inserted copper shavings into battle wounds to prevent infections and for thousands of years it was widely documented that drinking water from a copper vessel was the best way to prevent diarrhea.

The science behind copper’s self-disinfecting properties

What the ancients knew, modern scientists and organizations such as the Environmental Protection Agency have confirmed. When a microbe lands on copper, ions blast the pathogen like an onslaught of missiles, preventing cell respiration and punching holes in the cell membrane or viral coating accelerating the kill, especially on dry surfaces. But more importantly ions from the copper destroy the DNA and RNA inside a bacteria or virus, preventing the mutations that create drug-resistant superbugs.

This germ-killing property never deceases or wears off, which has prompted the EPA to register close to 400 copper surfaces as antimicrobial.

In March of 2020, a group of researchers reported that COVID91 which can survive for days on glass and stainless steel, dies within hours after landing on copper. Bill Keevel, a microbiology researcher at the University of Southampton (U.K.) was not surprised when he heard this report.

He has studied the antimicrobial effects of copper for more than two decades. He has watched in his laboratory as copper literally destroyed one bad bug after another. He began with the bacteria that causes Legionnaire's Disease and then turned to drug-resistant killer infections like Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). He tested viruses that caused worldwide health scares such as Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) and the Swine Flu (H1N1) pandemic of 2009. In each case, copper contact killed the pathogen within minutes. "It just blew it apart," he says.

In 2015, Keevil turned his attention to Coronavirus 229E, a relative of the COVID-19 virus that causes the common cold and pneumonia. Once again, copper zapped the virus within minutes while it remained infectious for five days on surfaces such as stainless steel or glass.

“One of the ironies is, people [install] stainless steel because it seems clean and, in a way, it is,” he says, noting the common use of stainless steel in public places. “But then the argument is how often do you clean? We don’t clean often enough.” Copper, by contrast, disinfects merely by being there.

Case Study: Copper vs Plastic

A two-year study published in October 2019 compared beds in an intensive care unit with plastic rails and those with copper rails. Both bed types had a daily cleaning and disinfection during the entire study. Only 10% of the plastic bed rails maintained acceptable levels of microorganisms while 91% of the self-disinfecting copper bed rails maintained acceptable thresholds. "We again demonstrated in spades that copper can keep the built environment clean from microorganisms," he says.

Other notable case studies include The Sentara Hospital system in North Carolina and Virginia made copper-impregnated surfaces the standard across 13 hospitals in 2017 for overbed tables and bed rails after a 2016 clinical trial at a Virginia Beach hospital reported a 78 percent reduction in drug-resistant organisms. Using technology pioneered in Israel, the hospital has also moved to copper-infused bedding. France and Poland are beginning to put copper alloys in hospitals. In Peru and Chile, which produce copper, it is being used in hospitals and the public transit systems.

In Conclusion: Let Copper do what it does best - kill germs and viruses

It seems to us that when building a medical facility, business, or home from the ground up the decision is clear. We also understand that the decision is tougher when retrofitting existing, perfectly functional hardware and equipment with the self-disinfecting copper counterparts. The research is conclusive that there is a cost either way. So, you must ask yourself - what do you value more?

Our sources for this post are:

Copper.org: The Copper Development Association Inc.: the market development, engineering, and information services arm of the copper industry, chartered to enhance and expand markets for copper and its alloys in North America.

ncbi.nlm.nih.gov: National Center for Biotechnology Information, U.S. National Library of Medicine

ScienceDirect.com- Serving academic institutions, governments, and companies across all industries, ScienceDirect helps to drive productivity and spur innovation with intelligent features that support smarter research.

SMITHSONIANMAG.COM- Smithsonian magazine places a Smithsonian lens on the world, looking at the topics and subject matters researched, studied and exhibited by the Smithsonian Institution—science, history, art, popular culture and innovation—and chronicling them every day for our diverse readership.

urn:store:4:blog:post:72 https://www.sinksgallery.com/glass-vessel-sink-work-of-art The Glass Vessel Sink … A Work of Art in Your Bath
Vessel sinks have been in use for over 100 years. The first vessel sinks were simply deep bowl s placed on a stand which came from the English tradition. Some washstand tables were fitted with a hole where the bowl could be set into for better support. Today’s vessel sinks are more than functional; they are beautiful works of art and can be found in a wide range of materials and manufacturing techniques.

Glass is readily available, eco-friendly, and an exceptional choice for a vessel sink. Glass vessel sinks are versatile and can be found in almost any color, shape, and size that will complement all sorts of bath furniture, style, and color scheme. Glass vessel sinks made from 100% recycled glass are eco-friendly, helping to protect the earth from castoff glass by repurposing it into beautiful art.

Cloudy Bay Glass Vessel Sink

Due to their unique and beautiful design, vessel sinks are often mounted on top of the counter to show off the entire sink and exhibit it like the work of art that it is. A vessel sink can be installed on the countertop (above counter mount) or sunk into the counter at varying heights (drop-in mount). Semi-recessed vessels are a hybrid of drop-in and vessel and are designed to sit so that the bottom of the bowl is below counter height, while the rim is several inches above the countertop. Installation is fairly easy.

If you choose semi-recessed or drop-in mounted, you can add to the drama and highlight the sink with specially installed lighting beneath the sink to show off its striking color and design.

When redecorating you will normally first choose a style and color pallet base to work from. If you haven’t decided upon a color pallet yet you will find inspiration by browsing the colors and styles of the gorgeous glass vessel sinks in an online catalog. Once you find a vessel sink gem it will be easy to decorate around the sink as a focal point of your bath. It is after all one of the first things one sees when using the bath of your home. A uniquely styled, handcrafted glass vessel sink will quickly become the jewel of your bath.
urn:store:4:blog:post:56 https://www.sinksgallery.com/natural-granite-sinks Natural Granite Sinks

Granite sinks make strong statements in both kitchens and bathrooms. Brawny, earthy and bold, granite sinks are built not only to last but also to impress. From small circular bathroom vessels to large kitchen farmhouse sinks, granite sinks are an extraordinary alternative to traditional wash basins.

When many people think of granite sinks, visions of huge farmhouse basins frequently come to mind. While many granite sinks are in fact large, there are also a great number of smaller basins that incorporate the aesthetic strengths of granite into more conservative designs. Hand-sculpted from a solid piece of granite, this small round sink measures roughly 17" x 5" and is ideal for bathrooms. Although the finish is smooth, the earthy characteristics of the granite are still very apparent and give the sink an overall rustic feel. What's more, the sink is designed for vessel mount, which allows for a beautiful display.

urn:store:4:blog:post:57 https://www.sinksgallery.com/kitchen-sink-grate Protect Your Basin with a Kitchen Sink Grate

With the heavy barrage of pots, pans, and cutlery that end up in your kitchen sink, it’s inevitable that your sink basins will suffer a little abuse over their lifetime. Dropping a heavy bowl or scraping a serrated knife while working in the sink are unanticipated but common accidents, and have the potential to leave permanent scars on your sink. When you’ve invested in an artisan copper or stone kitchen sink that becomes the centerpiece of your kitchen, you’ll be even more inclined to keep it safe. A kitchen sink grate is a low-profile solution that will keep your basins protected and looking their best.

A quality kitchen sink grate is crafted to fit in the bottom your specific sink’s basin. Depending on the radius of the corners of your sink, ranging from very squared to very rounded, you’ll need to order a sink grate that is made to sit snugly in the bottom of your basin.

The style of your sink grate can vary widely, as well. Your most utilitarian option is the Stainless Steel Sink Grid, which is designed exclusively to fit single basin stone farmhouse kitchen sink models from the Stone Forest artisans (Models C04-33, C04-33PF, and C04-NF only). This fitted metal grid is made of stainless steel and has a simple modern style that is discreet and doesn’t disguise the beauty of the artisan sink or drain underneath.

On the more ornate end of the style spectrum is a product like the Mosaic Sink Grate, crafted specifically for SoLuna Copper Kitchen Sinks. The Mosaic Sink Grate has a beautifully detailed mosaic motif and is plated in bronze. It includes a rubber base for even greater sink protection and is available in many sizes to accommodate the variety of styles of SoLuna copper standard and farmhouse kitchen sinks. Again, ordering the correct dimensions is critical so that the sink grate slides easily into the bottom of your sink, but isn’t small enough to wiggle around and leave vulnerable unprotected areas.

In terms of style, the Traxx Sink Grate for copper sinks lies somewhere between simple and designer. Rounded rectangular slits are cut out of this bronze-finished sink grate, resulting in more of a contemporary look than the Mosaic style. Each sink grate sits a half inch tall in your sink basin. The available dimensions of the Traxx Sink Grate vary to accommodate the SoLuna copper kitchen sinks, but can also be customized. Give us a call to discuss your project and suitability for customization.

The Mosaic and Traxx bronze-finished sink grates require regularly washing in hot soapy water and a quick rinse with hot water before drying. For the best longevity, do not allow cleaners to remain in contact with your grate for long periods of time as this may induce spotting. If stubborn stains occur, you can rinse the grate and apply Bartender’s Friend or Copper Glo with a damp rag. We advise that you avoid using abrasive or highly alkaline cleaners, as these will scuff and/or scratch the finish.

No matter which of our sink grate styles you choose for your kitchen sink basins, you can be assured that choosing to add a kitchen sink grate will maintain the beauty and finish of your artisan kitchen sink for its lifetime!

urn:store:4:blog:post:58 https://www.sinksgallery.com/asian-style-bathroom-sinks 5 Unique Bathroom Sinks for Asian Style

The world’s largest continent is bound to drive interior design and style around the globe. Over the years, we have guided thousands of people towards finding the optimal copper kitchen sink for any situation.

Single Well Copper Kitchen Sink

A kitchen sink with a single well is ideal for smaller spaces or for kitchens that don’t usually experience a lot of traffic. This is also a good option if you’re looking to open up more counter space for other uses. A single well copper sink will be suitable even in a larger kitchen, especially when combined with an additional bar or prep sink for added functionality. At Copper Sinks Online, we offer single-well kitchen sinks ranging from 30 to 36 inches in width, and bar/prep sinks starting at 22 inches. Shown above: our 33" Single Well Copper Standard Kitchen Sink with a drop-in installation.

Double Well Copper Kitchen Sink

The most versatile design for a kitchen sink, the double well model is useful for a variety of kitchen situations (Medium Double Well Copper Sink with 60/40 well split with undermount installation). Whether you cook only occasionally or love entertaining large parties at your home, a copper sink with a double well split can accommodate all of your needs. Soak dirty dishes in one well while rinsing them off in the other; attach a garbage disposer to one of the wells for easy clean up – the versatility of the double well sinks makes dishwashing a breeze. We offer copper sinks with 50/50 or 60/40 well splits, from 33 to 42 inches in width. Custom orders for sinks with 40/60, 70/30 well splits, etc., are also welcome.

Triple Well Copper Kitchen Sink

For larger kitchens in busy households, kitchen sinks with three wells may be extra useful. We offer a generously sized 42-inch copper sink that features a narrow middle well ideal for silverware, utensils, flat baking trays, etc., and two equally sized wells on each side of the sink. (Our Jumbo Triple Well Copper Farmhouse Sink) Custom split arrangements can be built upon request.

Standard or Farmhouse Front?

When selecting your kitchen sink, another important point to keep in mind is whether you’d like to reveal its front (farmhouse installation) or keep the front of the sink hidden inside of your cabinets (standard installation). While standard kitchen sinks are perfectly functional and attractive, farmhouse copper sinks offer a dramatic look thanks to their exposed apron. At Copper Sinks Online, we offer a variety of copper farmhouse sinks with gorgeous hand-hammered designs on their aprons. Our farmhouse sinks are available in single, double and triple well configurations to fit any kitchen style and budget. (Shown above: our Single Well Copper Farmhouse Sink with Two-Tone Scroll Design.)

Keep in mind that when installing a copper farmhouse sink into already existing cabinetry, it’s best to consult us on the exact proportions of your cabinets to make sure your sink fits correctly. If you’re having brand-new cabinets installed, a good rule is to have the sink ready before the cabinets are built.

Whichever configuration you select for your copper kitchen sink, at Copper Sinks Online we offer a variety of sinks with single, double and triple well splits, in standard and farmhouse configurations. Let’s focus on two types of materials that are offered: Bronze and Glass.

Bronze Baptismal Fonts

With several shapes available, the Bronze Baptismal Fonts require some customization. They are all handcrafted, so you will just need to choose the interior finish.

Bright patina

Dark patina

Smooth

Hammered

The differences between the dark and bright patinas are the color and cleaning requirements. The bright patina will require regular cleaning with detergent and water, while the dark patina will only need the occasional cleaning with soap and water, then adding wax.

Some of the Baptismal Fonts offer a solid bronze finish. These are unique in that they have a “living finish.” This means that the interior may change over time.

Here are the finishes that are available:

Traditional Bronze

Traditional Dark Bronze

Oil Rubbed Bronze

Satin Bronze

Satin Nickel

You can see the bronze color options here

Glass Baptismal Fonts

Because of the versatility of glass, The Glass Baptismal Fonts can be ordered as unique as you like. Between all of the color and pattern options, you can bring nearly any inspiration or design idea to life. You can also choose the sizing specifications, such as diameter, depth, and rim size of the basin.

Here are some ideas to get you started:

Glass Baptismal Font

Jade Stringer Glass Baptismal Font

Plate Glass Baptismal Font

Bases and stands are also available, so you will be able to get the complete setup for your location.

If you prefer an alternative type of Baptismal Font, you can see the other options here.

Because most of the copper, stone or glass basins at SinksGallery.com can be personalized, you can custom order your favorite vessel sink as a Baptismal Font.

Our experts are available to help you with any questions that you may have. Feel free to email or call today to start your custom order.
urn:store:4:blog:post:55 https://www.sinksgallery.com/soluna-teak-wood-vessel-sink A Review of Our SoLuna Teak Wood Vessel Sink

We're always thrilled when customers find exactly what they're looking for on SinksGallery.com. What do you think?
urn:store:4:blog:post:43 https://www.sinksgallery.com/trends-modern-kitchen-design Trends in Modern Kitchen Design

In the past, kitchens were discarded as the place for meals and household chores. Rarely did entertaining ever happen in the kitchen. Most homeowners would be embarrassed to bring someone into the kitchen unless it was a farmhouse or ranch. Then, kitchens became more of a centerpiece. Homeowners become more focused on creating beautiful kitchens that could be on the cover of magazines. Rarely are some of these elegant show kitchens even used for cooking or cleaning. The modern kitchen is a mixture of both. It is becoming the heart of the home as an ideal place for entertaining guests while also maintaining the functionality of the kitchen.

There are 6 primary aspects you have to consider when remodeling the kitchen:

- Color

- Tone

- Style

- Design

- Comfort

- Function

By understanding how these aspects work together, you can build the kitchen of your dreams.

Color & Tone

A piece of advice from almost every designer is: “Gray is the new white”. You can't go wrong with gray cabinets or cupboards. It is a smooth color that blends with every accent color. It's neutral while being more engaging than the typical white or beige colors. Once you know the base colors for your kitchen, typically neutral tones, you can decent what the accent color should be. You should be flexible with the accent color because you may want to change it over time.

Accent colors can be used to bring life to:

- Backsplashes

- Cabinet handles

- Lighting fixtures

- Stools

- Art & decor

Most designers are choosing to add color to the appliances instead of the cupboards. Many appliances can be bought in bright colors instead of the traditional off-white. Bright colors will open the room up, giving it more of a homey feeling. Chrome is also a good choice for appliances because of the appearance, but it's harder to keep them clean. Chrome appliances often get streaky, especially if you have children in the house. Black and darker matching appliances are often the ideal choices because:

- Black is flexible and matches everything

- Black is sleek and elegant

- Black and other dark colors are easy to keep clean

Of course, black and white are always a classic go-to for any kitchen. This is because you can add accents in any additional color and they will always match. Black and white are popular together because they also offer a juxtaposition of light and dark. You can accomplish this with light and dark wood as well or even using different shades of marble. Creating a contrast between light and dark is a great way to bring life to your kitchen.

Bright colors should always be used in moderation as too much color may be overwhelming. However, the absence of bright colors can make the kitchen feel dull and boring. Find a happy medium within your color palette, but always keep flexibility in mind.

Style & Design

A great way to personalize your kitchen is through the backsplash you choose. You can opt for a basic pattern in neutral colors or you can opt for a non-traditional style. Complicated patterns may appear hard on the eyes when you're looking at them in-store. However, when added to your kitchen, can add elegance. A dash of color in your backsplash helps it to stand out from the wall as well.

You can also let your kitchen radiate your personality by:

- Hanging art on the walls of your kitchen

- Choosing light fixtures that stand out

- Mixing materials for your countertops

- Blending contemporary styles with traditional styles

- Using bold fixtures

One of the latest design trends is installing dark flooring throughout the kitchen. Some designers are even adding color to the flooring to make it really stand out. Shapes are important when it comes to style and design. Most designs choose the aesthetically pleasing look of straight lines. If you want to choose a more complicated design, make sure you're complimenting your pattern. Choosing the right patterns for the kitchen can be as pleasing as choosing the right colors. Explore your options. Note that in terms of kitchen styles, modern-classic is still huge: not all homes are suitable for an ultra-modern look, so be prepared to consider a wide range of options that can match other elements of your building.

It is worth noting that the use of copper sinks are popular for both modern and classic kitchens. This is not only due to the anti-bacterial properties and other benefits of copper, but indeed because it can blend in well with multiple styles. Many designers search on CopperSinksOnline, Houzz, Sinkology and other sites for ideas and ultimately after comparing Soluna with the other options on the market, they end up choosing our SoLuna copper brand which also offers custom-made copper sinks.

Comfort

A kitchen should always be comfortable to spend time in. Whether it's sitting on a comfortable stool as a guest or standing over a farmhouse sink to prepare dinner for the family.

There are many different ways you can improve the comfort of your kitchen, such as:

- Installing a farmhouse sink in place of your current sink

- Removing overhead cabinets completely

- Using tiles on the walls and floor

- Improving the overall functionality

Functionality

A beautifully designed kitchen is fairly useless when the designer doesn't consider the functionality as well. A few examples of functionality include:

- Using technology to open and close cupboards and drawers

- Installing motion-sensor faucets and lighting fixtures

- Installing pull-out or rotating cupboards

- Maximizing kitchen storage in a unique and useful way

- Hiding appliances behind cupboards

- Hiding the stove vent behind a cupboard

Enhancing the functionality of your kitchen is a must when you're redesigning the space. For many of these improvements, there are DIY instructions to save time and money. As long as you have a good eye for visualizing, you should be able to improve the function of your kitchen.

Additionally, having an island in your kitchen is ideal for functionality. It has the secondary function as a table, which makes it ideal for entertaining guests. The additional counter space makes it a dream come true for most busy moms and professional cooks. If you choose an island with storage, it increases the storage options for you as well. Some islands even have a second sink installed!

The island is the center of the kitchen, so it's important to choose wisely.

One thing that rarely crosses a homeowner's mind is pets. More often than not, the pet feeding station is somewhere in the kitchen. This is your opportunity to install the feeding station directly into the cabinets by leaving space for the dishes. You can also create a play area for cats or a pull-out sleeping area for dogs if you're interested in making the kitchen feel more homey and comfortable. It is important to find the proper balance between looking good and functioning properly.

Remember: You don't need to completely remodel your kitchen to give it a new look. You can simply reface the existing cupboards. This can save you money that you can easily use towards enhancing your current kitchen. A dull kitchen only needs an appealing backsplash and a few pieces of art hung on the walls to transform the entire room. You just have to get creative!
urn:store:4:blog:post:44 https://www.sinksgallery.com/soluna-copper-sinks-copper-bathtubs SoLuna Copper Sinks, Copper Bathtubs and so much more!

Join Us on Facebook

Brand: SoLuna

Company Name: Copper Sinks Online

In Business: over 20 years

Part of the ArtisanCrafted.com Family

Company Overview

Copper Sinks Online is a team of copper specialists with expertise in SoLuna copper. They offer the highest quality copper sinks, copper bathtubs and accessories at affordable prices because they don't buy their products from a third-party supplier. Unlike the competition they work directly with the artisans to create the finest quality selection of handcrafted copper products on the market today.

About the SoLuna Brand

SoLuna, synonymous with high quality, distinctively handcrafted, hand hammered copper bath basins, copper farmhouse sinks, copper kitchen sinks, luxurious copper soaking tubs and exclusive copper lighting brings the warmth of the Mexican sun into your home and business. This sounds like it might be referring to color or even texture. Maybe a sink basin made of wood or wood-colored. It actually refers to a style of sink that has a deep basin that is also wide.

Inspired by history and tradition:

Today, farmhouse sinks are hugely popular across America. Perhaps a little bit of background first: the farmhouse sink was originally invented in the 17th century when water was sparse in many places. In Ireland, the Belfast was the original farmhouse sink, designed to hold large amounts of water, generally collected from a nearby lake. There was an overflow design that would allow the water to escape if the sink was too full. A similar design emerged around the same time in London as well. The London farmhouse sink wasn't as deep and there was no overflow for water.

There are many benefits to choosing a farmhouse sink for a modern kitchen:

Much deeper than any traditional sink

Allows for more space and the ability to prepare food with ease

Allows for a build-up of dishes, while still having the room for running water

Makes it easier to clean large pots and baking trays that typically don't fit in a traditional sink

Typically installed so any water splashes land on the floor, not the cupboards

Adds a hint of elegance to any kitchen with its vintage charm

What You Should Know About Farmhouse Sinks

What you should know about farmhouse sinks is that they are significantly heavier than the traditional sink. This is because of the size and shape but can be amplified by the type of material you choose as well. With water in them, they can weigh as much as 300 lbs. This means that any farmhouse sink should be properly supported by the surrounding counter space. Typically, installing a farmhouse sink will require a remodel of the counter space around the sink. Again, because these sinks are much larger. Unfortunately, the size of these sinks leaves no space under the sink for storage.

It is also useful to know that farmhouse sinks do not have faucets in them. Instead, the faucet is actually installed and attached to the counter space behind the basin. Many of the traditional faucets will not fit the sizing or shape of this design. Therefore, you will want to purchase vintage faucets that are tall and curved enough to work as intended.

The installation of these sinks can be done in three ways. The first method installs the sink so the edge is flush with the counter. The second method allows the sink to stick out from the counter. The third method pushes the sink further back so there is an edge where the counter sticks out further. The way you need your farmhouse sink installed will depend on the space you have available.

Farmhouse sinks can be a single tub or a double tub, depending on your needs. They can also be made out of different materials. Here are a few of the most popular choices:

Fireclay (durable, a glossy shine, lasts a long time, fairly inexpensive)

Porcelain (inexpensive, prone to chipping, prone to staining and discoloration)

Stainless steel (inexpensive, easy to maintain, steals from the beauty of a farmhouse sink)

Copper (highly durable, long-lasting, easy to maintain, mid-price)

Copper farmhouse sinks are quite popular for many reasons. Yet some people aren't familiar with copper sinks in general so remember that choosing a copper farmhouse is a great idea provided you learn how to properly maintain them.

The Pros & Cons of a Copper Farmhouse Sink

There are pros and cons to everything and a copper sink is no stranger. Sometimes, reviews online will often turn up the negative side of copper sinks, while completely ignoring the benefits. Note that most of the cons can be taken care of if you follow our professional cleaning guidance for copper sinks.

Below, we're going to look at both the benefits and the downside of choosing a copper sink.

Cons

Many different foods can cause the color of copper to shift

Foods that are high in acid can stain the living finish

Copper naturally changes color over time (this is the living finish)

The outer layer (or living finish) can chip or scratch off, looking unappealing

Having an uneven finish is an almost guarantee

Pros

Copper has natural properties that make the surface antibacterial

There is a very low risk of long-term stains developing

Copper has a vintage charm

Copper is elegant

Copper sinks will last a long time if properly cared for, it is all down to proper maintenance.

Proper Maintenance for Your Copper Farmhouse Sink

If you do know something about copper sinks, you've likely heard they are hard to maintain. There is some truth to this, but it's largely incorrect. The reason people believe copper is hard to maintain is that it has a living finish. This means, it naturally changes color over time. The sink will not remain the same color. This doesn't mean there is anything wrong with the finish, either. This is part of the natural beauty that comes from choosing copper.

Of course, there are some tips for keeping a copper sink looking nice:

Don't use abrasive or harsh chemicals

Don't use any abrasive materials (like scrubbing pads)

Don't leave small amounts of water in the sink

Don't soak anything in the sink that has a high concentration of vinegar (such as ketchup)

Don't leave citrus fruits in the sink

Wash regularly with warm water and soap

Maintenance for a copper sink boils down to understanding that there is a living finish. You want to allow your sink to naturally change colors. If this lack of uniformity is going to be an issue for you, you're not going to want to choose copper for your home.

In closing, there are a few things you have to consider when you're choosing a farmhouse sink:

Your usage

The space you have available

The design of your kitchen

Your willingness to remodel

Choosing the best sink is more about personal preference than anything else. kitchen, even if the idea is just in your head for now.

Remember: You don't need to completely remodel your kitchen to give it a new look. You can simply reface the existing cupboards or install an iconic sink. This can save you money that you can easily use towards enhancing your current kitchen. A dull kitchen only needs an appealing backsplash and a few pieces of art hung on the walls to transform the entire room. You just have to get creative!
urn:store:4:blog:post:46 https://www.sinksgallery.com/how-to-clean-a-copper-sink How To Clean a Copper Sink
There are many benefits to having a copper sink in your kitchen or washroom. Copper is a unique look that adds personality and life to a room. It can be an amazing addition to an otherwise drab room. Plus, copper sinks are significantly more reliable and last much longer. But even with those benefits, many people are hesitant to install copper sinks into their homes. Why? Because too many people believe that copper sinks are too much maintenance.

The fact is, copper is a living element. A copper sink will change tones, depending on how you're using it and how well you're caring for the finish. This isn't always a bad thing! Copper actually changes tone naturally. The “living finish” on a copper sink is known as Patina. This is actually just the word for the reaction between copper and interacting substances. Because of this, over time, your copper sink may get lighter or darker. You may even notice spots. This doesn't mean there is anything wrong with your sink! You just may need to clean it off. Now, if your sink starts turning green, that's a build-up of minerals on the surface of the sink. Often the result of an annoying dripping tap or water being left in the sink. This is common with hard water. Again, all you have to do is clean it off! It's that easy!

Consider the following before cleaning any copper sink:

But before you start scrubbing at those discolored spots, you may want to take a look at how to clean a copper sink. There's no strict rule to follow or anything, but if you follow these instructions, you'll ensure the life of your investment and keep your sink looking beautiful. This cleaning process should be done every day, at least once:

Clean your copper sink after every single use.

Use only light or mild soaps.

Always clear out any type of food that has fallen into the sink.

Do not allow dishes to sit in the sink.

Always use a soft cloth to wash the sink.

Never use any type of chemical on a copper sink.

Remember to dry your sink by dabbing paper towel after each cleaning.

You may have heard of Copper Armor or Wright's Copper Cream. These products can greatly extend the life expectancy of your copper sink. These products also add protection and can keep your sink looking like it was just installed yesterday! Additionally, you can rub a layer of wax on the surface of your copper sink to keep it looking shiny and delay the formation of patina.

Although the patina is the formation of a natural protector for your copper, like a shield it builds for itself. The patina can even repair itself from minor issues, such as water soaking in the sink. There are definitely other elements that affect the patina, such as:

Acidic foods

Citrus foods

Soda

Oils (even from your skin!)

Toothpaste

All chemicals

Abrasive materials (cloths, SOS pad)

The final scoop on cleaning a copper sink:

The good news is that if you properly care for your copper sink, you should never have any problems with it. These sinks are designed to be stronger and more reliable, as previously mentioned. Copper sinks also reduce the risk of bacteria, along with their unique look.
urn:store:4:blog:post:47 https://www.sinksgallery.com/health-benefits-copper-sinks-bathtubs Health Benefits of Copper Sinks and Bathtubs
Copper is not only attractive and malleable but also among the most durable metals. At this point, you already know the vast benefits of choosing a handmade product crafted with care, versus a mass manufactured, box-store item. What you may be wondering now, are the features for which you should look in artisan sinks, to ensure you’re getting the best bang for your buck. Below are some key characteristics of glass, stone, and copper artisan sinks to keep your eye out for:

Make sure your glass artisan sinks….

… are properly annealed by an experienced artist. Annealing is a critical process of slowly cooling glass to relieve internal stresses. If glass sinks are not properly annealed, they are liable to crack or shatter when subject to temperature change or mechanical shock.

…are made of quality glass. Spruce Pine and Spectrum glass are both manufactured in the US and are made up of the best recipe for quality glass art pieces.

…have consistent thickness. Inconsistent glass thickness on your sink is a sure sign of an inexperienced glass artist.

…are not flat on the bottom. A glass artisan sink should be curved all the way to the drain, so that water flows and does not well up.

… are drilled correctly to allow a level drain. To avoid water welling up around the drain, the drain hole should be beveled to allow the drain to sit level with the glass.

Make sure your stone artisan sinks…

… is made of solid stone. It is unfortunate that many companies pitch their composite stone sinks as “real stone sinks,” when they truly are not.

… has natural voids that are filled. A natural chunk of stone will inevitably have several voids or fissures – those frankly add character and individuality to the piece. Any of those natural features should be filled with a mixture of stone dust and epoxy, however, to match the sink and ensure a smooth, functional product.

… is consistently polished. A genuine artisan stone sink should be polished evenly to accentuate the natural texture, grain, and colors of the sink. Spotty buffing is indicative of an inexperienced craftsman.

Make sure your copper artisan sinks…

… are made of thick, 14-gauge copper. Any thinner than this and your copper sink is at risk of easily denting, and will often sound “tinny” and require sound insulation.

… are made of high-quality copper that does not include lead. Copper sinks should be made out of 99% pure copper and 1% zinc for added strength and integrity. Copper alloys with lead are sometimes used in sinks made in the Middle East, India, and China. Although this alloy is less expensive, lead is harmful to humans and should be avoided.

… are not lacquered. A quality copper sink will have a living finish, that changes and gains patina over time. Some companies attempt to guarantee a consistent finish by adding a coating of lacquer to prevent natural patina. Our experience is that customers with lacquered copper sinks end up unhappy because lacquer will inevitably chip and crack. We make sure to educate our customers about copper’s living finish, so there are no surprises.

… are properly shaped and evenly hammered. Although hand hammered products won’t be perfectly shaped, they definitely should not be “out of square” or “out of round.” The purpose of hammering a copper sink is both to harden the copper and to give the metal its unique handcrafted appearance. Manufactured copper sinks often have fewer and shallower hammer pits, as opposed to our artisan’s tight, beautiful hammered look.

… are properly welded. Many manufactured sinks are quickly welded together with only a few spots of welding material (often containing lead), which can result in failure during shipping or after installation. Genuine copper artisan sinks are TIG welded with copper rod along the entire length of the support.
urn:store:4:blog:post:38 https://www.sinksgallery.com/copper-bathtubs-5-awesome-ideas Copper Bathtubs: 5 awesome ideas for your bathroom

Copper in the bathroom is now a remarkable component to differentiation. If you really want to break away from the pack with bathroom decoration this is for you. Besides the numerous health benefits of copper, it is very trendy, so where can you start? To tickle your imagination, we’ve hand-picked a few interesting designs.

Idea 1: Copper, wood and a modern looking marble floor:

We all know that grey has become a major trend in recent years. As you can see here, a copper bathtub is used to add contrast and break the monotony that would arise from a grey/white color scheme. If you imagine the same room with any of the Artisan Crafted copper bathtubs, it could turn out rather unique – but keep reading there is more:

Idea 2: Old wood frame building with modern touches

If you buy a new home or a modern apartment, this idea will probably not work for you. Yet across the US, some stunning old mansions are being renovated. The amount of times people renovate homes and apply paint very rare wood is remarkable. But for many of us who know the value of wood, it is hard to paint and spoil the wood. So designers will often hear the question: “How can I keep this lovely old wood and still appear semi-modern? Above is a good example of how a blend of modern tiles and a stunning copper bathtub can be used to achieve that.

Idea 3: A copper bathtub with a view or incorporating a unique window frame

When decorating tight spaces, the question of the focal point is interesting. In the above image, notice how a round window frame with a view over a small garden is used as a focal point, with a massive looking copper bathtub positioned from wall to wall. The Mediterranean color scheme here fairly neutral and blends in well with the darker copper. A light copper will be just as efficient.

Idea 4: Copper bathtub with a fireplace and stone walls

Whether you like this idea for a ranch or mountain location, it’s pretty unique and people love it. Notice how the bath is again installed between two walls, positioned against a window for a view. As opposed to other cases where copper is used to create contrast, in the case of stone and a fireplace, a copper bathtub simply compliments these materials and blends in naturally.

Idea 5: A wooden design for a spa or bathroom

A bathroom is a peaceful place in your home where you’d like to relax and forget about the rest of the world. Many homes in the US contain a sauna, often located in the bathroom – which will inevitably incorporate wood in its design. Other bathroom designers simply seek to be different and may propose wood. Again – the use of a copper bathtub ads a special feel to any such design.

The above design ideas should serve as a good basis for inspiration when planning your dream bathroom. Besides bathroom customization, there is also the option of adding a custom-made copper sink to your bathroom. The best bathroom designers all display their work online these days – which makes your work so much easier. Whether you’d like to live a life of your own design or pick a great copper bathtub from us and replicate something that you found interesting – we have the widest range of copper bathtubs available. Remember: copper is easy to clean and healthy to use. It is more fashionable than ever and will give you that truly unique look if you’re prepared to use a bit of imagination when planning your new bathroom.
urn:store:4:blog:post:23 https://www.sinksgallery.com/copper-sink-maintenance-and-care Copper Sink Maintenance and Care
The beauty of your hand hammered copper sink is in its organic qualities. Copper is a metal that changes and evolves with time as it reacts with various elements and as it ages it becomes even more beautiful. Your sink is a unique, living and functional work of art. By following a few simple steps you can maintain it’s beauty for years to come.

Maintenance Basics

Maintaining the look of your new copper sink is easier then you may think. Basic cleaning after each use with a mild soap and water is sufficient. Other cleaners are not necessary. It’s important that you never use harsh chemicals or abrasive materials on your copper sink.

You should also avoid leaving acidic foods on the sink for long periods of time. Foods like tomatoes, oranges or lemons can temporarily lighten the copper patina finish. If this happens simply wipe the surface with mild soap and water and wait. Before long the sink will “heal” on its own regaining its patina.

If you want to speed the patina process, you can apply this home remedy for darkening copper. Dissolve 1 teaspoon salt into 1/4 cup ammonia and apply the solution to light areas. Let dry for 30 minutes and repeat until the desired shade is acquired. Apply Micro-crystalline Wax to protect the new patina.

Whether your sink has a natural patina or an applied patina finish, copper never stops changing color. As the surface ages and mellows, it becomes more beautiful. If you wish you can reduce this natural aging process by using wax. Wax is also helpful if you live where the water has high mineral content. But, do not use Copper Polish on your sink unless you intend to maintain a bright and shiny “new penny” look.

A product such as Renaissance Wax may be applied periodically to a clean copper surface. This will help maintain the luster and provide quicker water runoff. Water in your sink will “bead” when the surface is waxed. When water ceases to ‘bead’ you’ll know the wax has worn off and its time to wipe the sink down with wax on a soft cloth. Use a cloth or rag to gently buff on a layer of wax all over the basin of the sink. Once covered, use the same cloth to wipe the wax off.

Remember these points for maintaining your copper sink:

Rinse the sink after use with water and a mild soap and dry with a soft cloth.

Wipe off acidic food residue to protect the patina of your copper finish.

Do not use any abrasive materials or harsh copper cleaners to clean the sink.

If you have hard water, apply wax to create a shiny and protective coating.

Enhance Your Sink with a Grate

Think about adding the functional elegance of a sink grate. Grates have a rubber base that prevents slipping and is available in many sizes to accommodate the variety of styles of SoLuna Copper Standard and Farmhouse Kitchen Sinks.
urn:store:4:blog:post:24 https://www.sinksgallery.com/correcting-unwanted-copper-patina-colors Correcting Unwanted Copper Patina Colors
People have different preferences when it comes to copper tones. For those who pay close attention to color variations and want to “fix” their copper sink of these variations whether man-made or natural, here you will find useful information and directions to guide you through do-it-yourself methods for correcting unwanted copper patina colors.

Restore a Bright, Raw Copper Color

There are a couple of different ways of treating a copper sink that has developed inconsistencies, marks, or undesirable looks with the patina finish.

Most any copper cleaner (readily available at grocery or hardware stores) when used as directed, should remove all the discoloration and patina from the copper sink, and leave it with a bright, new copper color finish.

When the copper has an even tone all over after cleaning, use a product like Renaissance Wax to protect the copper and slow the natural patina process. The wax will act as a temporary barrier to elements and substances that come into contact with the copper, and the wax will also encourage beading and shedding of most liquids, much like wax on the exterior of a car or boat. Use the wax sparingly and as directed, and apply once every 4-6 weeks, depending on the daily use of the copper sink. Keeping the bright shiny look will require regular polishing with a commercial copper polish. You can extend the time between polishing with an application of Renaissance Wax.

If you start with a bright, raw copper tone but desire a natural patina look of milk chocolate, caramel or pumpkin pie hues, you will need the patience to let nature (water and oxygen) takes its course on the copper over time.

Darken a Shiny Spot in Your Patinaed Copper Sink

To fix a shiny spot in your dark copper sink, or to develop a darker patina finish on the sink manually rather than naturally, we suggest patience first. Copper has a living finish, and although it's tempting to try to find a quick fix, the BEST solution is to let the copper sink build patina back on its own, naturally over time.

The following two products can be used to jump-start the patina development process, but are not an instant solution to a shiny spot: Jax Brown-Black Copper Darkener, and 2. Liver of Sulphur (both available through Amazon or other online outlets). Both of these products require patience and a little technique for successful results. Apply a small amount of the liquid (according to the instructions on the product) to the sink. Let the solution sit on the copper for a few minutes until your sink reaches the desired color.

Another option: There is a home remedy that you can mix yourself to help speed up the patina process. It consists of 1/4 cup of ammonia and 1 teaspoon of salt. (Do not use any lemon products.) You can drop or dab it onto specific, affected areas, leave on for 30 minutes and then rinse off and repeat as needed. Patience is key. Copper naturally develops patina color when it's exposed to water and oxygen, and these solutions are only meant to jump-start the natural copper patina process.

When the new patina color blends with the neighboring area, apply a thin coat of Renaissance Wax to help protect and maintain this patina finish you just created—use sparingly and apply every 4-6 weeks.

Rules of Thumb To Preserve Your Copper Patina Color

Results may vary, depending on application technique. Keep in mind that copper is a natural element that constantly changes color with anything that comes into contact with it. Being cautious about substances that might stay on the surface of your copper sink is good practice to minimize those undesirable patina marks, dark or light. A quick rinse with water after every use is recommended. Here is a list of commonly used items or foods that can remove patina from copper:

Strong or abrasive cleaners (Copper is naturally antimicrobial; no bleach is necessary to sanitize copper)

Sponges with a scrubby-side

Toothpaste often contains peroxide or even bleach that will remove the patina finish off copper, as do a variety of other common personal use items

Foods/liquids high in acidity: any citrus fruits, tomatoes, vinegar or pickled foods, alcohol, spicy foods, coffee, and juices

Be sure to rinse the sink immediately after any of these things have been used to make sure they do not linger on the surface of the sink for an extended period of time. Leaving foods or liquids on the copper will not harm the sink, and the patina will return in time. If you live in an area where the water has a high mineral content, you may choose to wipe down the sink with a soft cloth to avoid water spotting or mineral build up.

If you develop a shiny spot in your dark copper sink, DO NOT wax your entire sink! You only want to wax the color you want to preserve. We recommend waxing AROUND the shiny spots so that water and oxygen can get to the raw copper and begin to develop a patina. The best practice is to follow the steps above to manually jump-start the patina process, and only wax the sink once you've achieved the desired color.

Regardless of which patina color you choose, copper is a beautiful living element, and never really stops changing in color. It will lighten and darken with use and develop its own charm and character. When you own a copper sink, it is like having a simple and harmless science experiment you can play with every day! Patience and understanding of what copper is and how it reacts make owning a copper sink interesting and fun.
urn:store:4:blog:post:25 https://www.sinksgallery.com/will-my-copper-sink-turn-green Will Your Copper Sink Turn Green?

We’re all familiar with the light green color on the Statue of Liberty, which, of course, is made from copper. What is this green color, and will your copper sink turn green?

Known as verdigris, this green pigment happens to copper, brass, and bronze when it’s exposed to seawater or salt air at the time of weathering.

Will this happen to your copper sink?

It’s possible but highly unlikely. Most of the copper kept indoors will not develop verdigris, but if you live near the ocean and your copper sink is installed in an area that gets exposed to the salt air, you may see verdigris develop.

We’ve also seen some soaps cause green spots on copper. Don’t worry though, these green spots aren’t harmful, and some customers welcome this patina.

If you notice a few verdigris spots start to develop on your sink, simple soap and water will remove them in most cases. If the spots are more stubborn then you can use store bought copper cleaner, vinegar or, or even lemon juice to remove the patina. Keep in mind that by removing the patina you are restoring the metal back to its original state, which is like a bright shiny new penny.

But never fear! These shiny spots will develop a new patina over time and eventually blend in with the rest of the sink color.

Remember, copper has a living finish, and the color will always be changing. Nothing is permanent, so enjoy the natural characteristics and how your sink will evolve over time.

RELATED ARTICLES

Copper Buyer’s Guide

Copper Facts

Copper, the Environmental Choice

The SoLuna Copper Brand

SoLuna Competition

Copper Sink Patina Finishes

Copper Lighting Patina Finishes

Custom Made Copper Products

Farmhouse Sink Installation

Copper Maintenance

urn:store:4:blog:post:26 https://www.sinksgallery.com/can-you-make-a-custom-sink-for-me Can You Make a Custom Sink for Me?

Yes, we can make a custom sink for you! Things like copper purity, gauge (thickness), construction technique, the patina, style, size, position of the install (drop-in, under-mount, or vessel), but even before all these the most important consideration is the company who will sell you the sink.

Just as with anything you buy, from a pair of shoes to your next car, the brand and features are important of course, but even more important are the people on the other side of the sale. Why? Because these are the people you will deal with when the shoe rips at the seam or if the car turns out to have the qualities of a lemon.

Inexpensive copper sinks can be found on auction sites, big box stores and on the web too. Often auction sites sell cheap sinks without a vendor’s warranty and the big box stores rarely have a knowledgeable someone standing with you to answer your questions. And, if the product you bought doesn’t fit correctly or is damaged in some way will you be able to easily satisfy the problem?

The question is how do you find a company you can rely on? There are several things to look for when looking for a company that will support you every step of the way from purchase to delivery and beyond.

The company you choose to buy your sink from should have a history of offering quality products and satisfied customers. Look for solid customer reviews when deciding where to buy.

The company should offer customer service with knowledgeable, attentive personnel who are available for consultation and to answer questions. (If the company doesn’t have a phone number, or if you call and get stuck in a voice-mail loop and no one calls you back, that would be a bad sign.)

The company should offer a warranty against defects and stand behind their products. This is too important to overlook and is worth paying a little more for.

A reputable dealer will provide their shipping location and clearly state their warranty and return policies.

The company should offer customization of their products. There are standard sinks for standard installs and then there are installs that require customization. The company you choose should easily help you with any customizations you may require.

Bottom line, you won’t be buying a copper sink every day so be sure you get to know the company you choose and be sure they will support your purchase every step of the way. You won’t be sorry if you take a little time to make the right choice.
urn:store:4:blog:post:21 https://www.sinksgallery.com/has-mrsa-met-its-match Has MRSA Met its Match?

Over the past few years, the medical community has been increasingly concerned over the superbug MRSA (also known as or methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus), and for good reason. MRSA is the leading cause of healthcare-associated infections in the United States and is responsible for more than 80,400 severe infections and nearly 11,300 deaths every year, according to the CDC (Centers for Disease Control). But there is good news. This potentially-deadly superbug has met its match: Copper!

It is well known that frequently touched surfaces in hospitals especially but in other environments as well, serve as reservoirs for the spread of pathogenic microbes. Touchable surfaces in hospitals or your home such as doorknobs, railings, faucet handles, etc., are places where viruses, bacteria, and fungi colonize and persist for a very long time.

Some pathogens can live on these surfaces for up to 30 days. In a hospital, likely holdouts for these pathogens are the HVAC systems, push plates, tray tables, bed rails, IV poles, etc. Studies using copper instead of stainless steel on touchable surfaces are proving coppers antimicrobial properties can kill potentially deadly microbes usually within two hours or less. Copper on touch surfaces in intensive care unit (ICU) hospital rooms was reported by Science Daily to have reduced the number of healthcare-acquired infections (HAIs) in patients by more than half. Superbugs like MRSA are multi-drug resistant and actually pass their genes along to other bacteria making them resistant to antibiotics. This has been called ‘horizontal gene transfer’ and it’s the main process that causes superbugs.

What is exciting in the field of Microbiology and Infection control is that MRSA deposits cannot build upon copper surfaces and therefore die before this horizontal transfer can happen. What makes copper unique is that it doesn’t require a change in human behavior.

The weakest link in any hospital or home is the human link. We humans don’t always wash our hands and if we do we may wash the wrong way or not long enough to kill bacteria. In 2012, research published in the Journal of Clinical Microbiology reported that copper surfaces in Intensive Care Units reduced bacteria by 83% on average, and the effect didn’t require any behavioral changes. The staff continued working as they normally did. Another amazing finding is that copper surfaces have an “antimicrobial halo” effect on surrounding non-copper surfaces and that the halo extends up to 50 centimeters from the copper and reduces microbes 70% on those non-copper surfaces. These findings are incredible news that is important not only in the hospital setting but in our homes as well.

Although the superbug MRSA is most often found in hospitals and healthcare settings, in recent years cases of MRSA have been reported in high schools, colleges, and professional sports locker rooms all across the country. Until recently the only known way to reduce the incidence of a superbug like MRSA was careful handwashing, the introduction of antibacterial sprays or lotions, ultraviolet light, along with vigilant cleaning of all touchable surfaces, and in hospitals careful patient screening to isolate patients already infected. But none of these methods have stopped the spread of infections and all the while microbes have grown in strength and mutated into more virulent forms. But the game changer in the world of infectious pathogens is proving to be the use of copper on surfaces where these nasty bugs live.

Google+
urn:store:4:blog:post:22 https://www.sinksgallery.com/copper-santa-clara-del-cobre-mexico Copper from Santa Clara Del Cobre, Mexico
Copper Sinks Online works directly with 3rd generation coppersmiths in Santa Clara Del Cobre, Mexico. Santa Clara Del Cobre is a lively and passionate little town known for its copper craft and the highest quality copper goods available. The town is located about a 20 to 25-minute drive into the mountains from Patzcuaro, Michoacan.

Santa Clara enjoyed a boom back in the late 1990’s but has been experiencing a downturn with higher world copper prices and cheap imports from India and China. However, nothing made in either India or China can match the handmade techniques, the traditions or the quality of the products from Santa Clara.

The skill demonstrated by the Santa Clara craftsmen is impressive. Looking at their handiwork you cannot imagine all the hours and weeks involved in making these beautiful copper products. The length of time it takes per piece depends on its size, thickness, and decorative features.

The process used to create these amazing copper pieces is not even close to the mass-produced products sold by others. These are true works of art. Copper objects from Santa Clara Del Cobre have been collected by museums and collectors in various parts of the world.

If you visit the town you can find copper artisans happy to demonstrate their craft. Starting with a lump of copper, firing it and hammering it over and over using different hammers, they turn the lump of copper into a glistening copper object. The local copper mines are no longer in production but recycled copper is purified and used to make all new items.

The Process

The copper vessel making process starts by carefully calculating the size of a pure, solid copper lump before work begins. The lump is next heated red-hot before it is hammered, thinned, shaped, trimmed, bleached, polished and decorated with embossing. The initial hammering may require several people with sledgehammers to flatten the copper into a workable shape.

After the first round of hammering, smaller hammers are used as the piece thins. The work needs to be precise as it is almost impossible to correct errors in the sculpting process. If errors are produced the only solution is to start over. Many different types of tools are used and most are made by the artisan in the same workshop as the copper pieces.

After the basic shape is made the decorative and finishing work begins. A piece may be hammered from the inside to push the shape outwards and embossed by chiseling and engraving. Etching is done with acid. All the work is done solely by hand. Many hands may be required in the production of just one copper object.

It’s no wonder an order for a copper sink may start a process that takes several weeks to complete, but the end result is a quality copper piece that will last years and become a focal point of a beautifully designed kitchen, bath or bar.

Call us for a quote on a custom copper sink or choose one from the many beautiful styles in our online catalog. Knowing that my passion and life experiences needed more of a free-flowing and creative outlet, I turned to glass for solace.

In 1990, I walked into Pratt Fine Arts Center in Seattle and my path was immediately clear, this is what I needed to do in my life. I loved working, teaching and serving on the Board of Directors at Pratt for a two-year term. After a number of years I needed to work at a larger, professional studio and found Martin Blank’s Studio as the perfect environment. I rented the studio continuously for over 15 years. In April of 2001, I made the commitment to focus my career solely on glass and continue my artistic growth.

My search for creative vision is shown in my quest to integrate what the environment has to offer. I am especially moved and am influenced by the incredible shapes plants provide. Images of leaves, flowers, roots, windswept branches, the curl of a tendril from an offshoot of a stem, are inspirations within my designs. And, I am fascinated by both the simplicity and complexity of colors and the intrinsic beauty created when positioned together with light. It is the balance between grace and strength that I strive for in my work.

Designs of my current pieces have evolved from working in series, taking the technical preciseness and strong influence of traditional Venetian designs and adding my expression of movement, whimsy, color and simplicity. I am enamored with the process of glass and its unique formation into a blown form.

Product Examples:

Suzanne Guttman Cluster Glass Chandelier

Suzanne Guttman Glass Sink - Caliente

Suzanne Guttman Glass Tripod Chandelier

Suzanne Guttman Glass Tulip Sconce

Suzanne Guttman Wall Sculpture - Carolina Tree

Suzanne Guttman SR Flower Vase Sculpture

In Summary:

“Glass pushes every emotion for me,” says Suzanne. “It is a mental and physical challenge that connects my soul to creativity. The process of creating is a magical, spiritual journey. I am always awed and never bored, I love this art form.”

I am honored and proud to have my lighting, sinks and sculptures in residences, corporate environments and hotels throughout the world. I have adorned bathrooms from single-‐family homes, airplanes, and motor coaches to yachts and mega yachts built in Dubai, Asia and around the world. Although architectural work is my main passion, my aesthetic work (vases, sculptural pieces and bowls) are also collected and have adorned discerning homes and galleries worldwide.

Editor’s Note:

We would be remiss if any blog post about Suzanne Guttman Glass didn’t include Suzanne’s constant companion and closest friend - Scruffy. Pots that are made of copper are ideal heat conductors; the material is durable, hygienic, and corrosion-resistant. Source: www.tngun.com

For thousands of years, copper has been used to make the best pots and pans for cooking and roasting. This is due to copper possessing excellent material properties.

Specifically, it is the excellent heat conductivity that makes copper a perfect base material for pots and pans. It is widely known that copper conducts heat five times better than iron and even twenty times better than stainless steel. Due to the excellent heat conductivity properties, the heat spreads more evenly in copper cookware than in traditional pots and pans. This allows the temperature to be regulated more easily and therefore reduces the danger of scorching. As a result, it is possible to cook with less energy. As copper stores heat very well, meals that are served in copper pots stay warm longer than those prepared in traditional ones.

While copper has been mined, smelted, and used for thousands of years in art, currency, architecture, weapons and to cook our food, one can argue the most important use and its true superpower is the ability to kill germs.

Although not aware of what bacteria were or how bacteria cause illness, ancient civilizations did understand there were medicinal benefits in using copper. It is well documented that the Ancient Egyptians used water poured from copper to sterilize chest wounds. Greeks, Romans, and Aztecs relied on copper compounds to treat burns, headaches, and ear infections. Source: www.washingtonpost.com

The Amazing Antibacterial Properties of Copper

It has been shown that copper and its alloys can eradicate the most resistant bacteria and viruses.

“The antimicrobial activity of copper and copper alloys is now well established, and copper has recently been registered at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency as the first solid antimicrobial material.” Source: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov

Scientific tests in laboratories and experiments in different hospitals around the world have proved the effectiveness of copper and its alloys against bacteria such as salmonella, Escherichia coli, and staphylococcus resistant to methicillin (antibiotic). For over ten thousand years, mankind has been mining this incredible metal from deep within the Earth, and now we enjoy its luster and utility in home sinks made only from reclaimed, recycled, and repurposed copper. Used throughout history for everything from primitive tools, to ancient plumbing systems (still in good condition 5000 years later!) to the hulls of early American warships, this miraculous metal has become part of the fabric of our civilization. Copper is a metal of infinite usefulness and sustainability, since it can be melted, re-forged, and reshaped repeatedly, never needing to be thrown away or wasted like so many other materials. In this way, you are not only supporting the green building movement today but laying the foundation for its future.

Sources:

copper.org

tngun.com

washingtonpost.com

ncbi.nlm.nih.gov

sciencedaily.com

verywellhealth.com

copperalloystewardship.com

en.wikipedia.org

urn:store:4:blog:post:3 https://www.sinksgallery.com/sonoma-forge-designer-faucets-and-showers Sonoma Forge – Designer Faucets and Showers
Company Name: Sonoma Forge

In business since: 1999

Owners: Erik Ambjor

Click to view the entire Sonoma Forge Collection

Company Overview

Located in the Sonoma Valley of Northern California, Sonoma Forge features an exclusive line of hand-forged and designer faucets, as well as exposed and concealed shower systems along with coordinated accessories to complement each collection, all in an array of standard and special-order finishes.
